2023 Blending Trials Paused

We started blending trials two weeks ago with Boisseau Vineyard. Decisions were relatively easy as each lot not only showed well but complimented each other. The final blend will comprise of around 70% of the total production. This is a very high percentage. A satisfying start.

Then we went down a rabbit hole. Hardscrabble proved much more difficult. But this is because there is so much good material to work with. An embarrassment of riches. 30 barrels, each different and distinct, and each of a quality level worthy of the Hardscrabble designation. It is difficult to exclude really good wine. We tried too hard to make it all work for the final blend. We came up with something that was quite good. But vintage 2023 can be much better than quite good. The blends we came up with lacked clarity and precision.

So we are taking a pause. Rebooting. Contemplating. This week will be dedicated to tasting benchmark wines. Palates need to be fine-tuned. This is too important to rush.
