The weather conditions of any given growing season have a direct and substantial impact on the quality, style, balance and life of any wine. This is particularly true in the northern European and eastern US winegrowing regions.
Beginning in the mid 1990’s I looked to my European colleagues for guidance in understanding how to make wines appropriate to the vintage. Over the past 10 years I have taken their cue on reducing crop levels according to the strength of the vintage, picking by soil type, blending, declassification, appropriate barrel regimes, and bottling times. No two vintages will ever be the same. This is both a challenge and a blessing.
As each new wine is released, our pricing will vary according to the success of the vintage. I feel strongly that growing conditions are intrinsically linked to a wine’s quality.
