Ever leave the house for a trip and have that feeling that you forgot something? We are ready, well prepared, but maybe not so well rested. The first day of harvest came quickly this year. The season started two weeks early back in April and has kept pace all  summer. There is something psychological about picking grapes in August that I don’t like. It is usually hot and humid, but this is hardly the case with temps right now in the 50Fs. The high today will barely push 70F.

This cool trend is welcome. I feared a repeat of 2016 when the entire harvest was hot, fast and furious. Cool weather slows ripening and especially for the whites gives us better wine with more defined acidity and flavors.

Off to Boisseau Vineyard to pick Chardonnay and Viognier. Will also pick Hardscrabble Semillon. Sounds like a lot, but in each case there will only be a ton or so of grapes (small plantings). JL
