2018 Vintage Summary

A Soggy Slog

2018 was with wettest year ever recorded in this area. Much of that rain fell during the growing season. To say the vintage was challenging would be an understatement. It was the most difficult year I have experienced in growing grapes in Virginia since 1981. Facing reality by strategically “punting” was the best way to approach growing and winemaking decisions. The result: light, pretty, quaffable white and rosé wines with no red wines produced for vintage 2018.

2018 Linden Petit Manseng demi-sec

Demi sec translates as half dry which means that there is just a touch of sweetness in the wine. This is to balance out the natural piercing acidity that the grape variety Petit Manseng is known for. The 2018 has an especially zingy acidity which makes the wine seem almost dry. This wine will benefit from aging.

2018 Linden Riesling

This is a pretty, light bodied, playfully styled Riesling. The nose has clear and pristine citrus zest aromas with a splash of tarragon. Not complex, but confident. The palate is refreshing, with a ying yang melding of sweet and tart. A light touch of dry tannins at the end keeps the wine lingering.

2018 Linden Sauvignon Blanc

Linden’s 2018 Sauvignon Blanc shows that charm and balance are best achieved in cloudy, wet vintages. There is a distinct calcareous/oyster shell aroma along with a subtle white flower perfume. There is a saline and gunflint flavor profile in the entry, then some mid-palate flesh that balances the lemon rind acidity on the finish.

2018 Linden Rosé

Linden's 2018 Rosé is delicate, refined, restrained, and complex. It is "salmon" light in color. Aromas include: fennel, citrus zest, dried thyme and Devonshire cream. The body is light to medium bodied. The wine is dry with zippy acidity and just a touch of pithy tannin to add to its length.
