Sorting and Pressing White Grapes
September 15, 2021

Work starts early on the sorting pad.

All hands on deck.

The sorting table.

Sorting requires sharp eyes and quick hands.

Grapes slide down the conveyor belt.

Grapes drop down the chute to the press below.

The de-stemmer separates grapes from their stems.

On the bottom pad, two grape presses are in operation: one fills with sorted grapes as the other gently turns and presses the first batch of grapes.

Jonathan monitors the de-stemmed grapes falling through the chute.

Grapes drop gently.

Grapes are spread out evenly above the bladder that will be inflated to squeeze out their juice.

At the other press, Jim and Shari check the settings.

Shari monitors pressure on the grapes.

Juice pours into the basin below.

Jonathan tastes the juice for quality and readiness.

Future Chardonnay!

Jonathan prepares to pump juice.

Juice flows out.

Juice is pumped into cooled steel tanks.

Sorted stems collect in the waiting cart.

Jim backs a trailer under the pressing pad to receive the crushed skins.

Both sorting and pressing levels are cleaned thoroughly.

Shoveling the crushed skins down into the trailer.

Franny, the vineyard dog, congratulates the team.

Jim heads out with clean lugs to begin another round of picking.
