Hardscrabble Journal

Two tenths of an inch

We got very lucky last night. Only two tenths of an inch of rain. This will have no direct negative effect on fruit quality. However the down side is that is is warm and wet outside right now. I can feel the botrytis rot ready to rear its ugly head.

We had a record picking yesterday: We harvested grapes in all three vineyards and picked all four red varieties: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Only Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot remain, but we have a lot of these two varieties. Fruit quality is outstanding.

We now have 36 hours to get as much as possible off of the vines before a more significant rain is predicted. We also have to crush what we picked yesterday. We will not be able to pick the entire vineyard before the next rain, so triage strategies play a major role. We will, however, be able to get all the ‘good stuff’ in the winery by tomorrow evening. Pressure.
