Hardscrabble Journal

Cat and Mouse

Rainy day. Not what we want, but at least we feel confident about pulling the trigger on yesterday’s pick. Looks like some hard decisions coming up as we play the cat and mouse game with alternating rain chances and sunny days. Will take more grape samples tomorrow and keep a watchful eye on the remnants of Harvey which could affect out Labor Day weather. Fortunately the temperatures are cool which reduces the chances of rot spreading in the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

We have about 350 lugs of grapes in the cooler from yesterday. A modest amount which is a good way to start crush. If there are equipment problems, they are most likely to show up on the first day. Nice to not have a lot of pressure in terms of quantity. Quality-wise I would categorize the first lot as moderate. The numbers are good (acid, pH and sugar), but the concentration and “verve” factors are not real inspiring. Cooler temperatures will hopefully remedy this for future pickings.
