Native Cover Crops | Red and White Clovers
Clovers are now in full bloom under the vines. Red clover is lush and vigorous. Often too vigorous as it can grow too tall and block air circulation under the clusters. White clover stays close to the ground and is much less competitive. As much as I appreciate the visual beauty of red clover, I’m in the white clover camp.
Both of these are leguminous meaning they take nitrogen from the air and make it available to other plants in the soil. They can also crowd out other noxious weeds. I’ve been encouraging their growth over the past ten years and they are now a significant part of Hardscrabble’s vineyard floor.
