Learning to pronounce the names of certain grape varieties is one of the many hurdles we face.

Climate Trial Plantings

Today we are planting additional vines in Hardscrabble’s Climate Change Trial Vineyard. This will bring our total up to about two dozen different varieties.

Our intention is to observe how these varieties perform under a changing climate. We are looking at disease resistance (especially bunch rots), ripening timing (later ripening is preferred as our climate warms), and flavor development (acid retention in whites and tannin texture in reds).

These plantings are too small for us to practically make wine. This first phase of the trial is to discover which varieties show promise under different growing conditions. The second phase will involve larger plantings of the varieties that perform well. We’ll then be able to make wine and evaluate quality potential. No immediate gratification with this project.
