Linden Update | April 27, 2022

Chardonnay vines budding out. April 26, 2022

Vulnerable

This is how we are feeling right now. Most of our vines have budded out and are now freeze susceptible. The forecast for the next few days is not in our favor. A few degrees up or down could make the difference between a full crop and significant losses.

Frost protection was one of the priorities in choosing what is now Hardscrabble Vineyard. The site is located in a thermal inversion zone. During calm frosty conditions, the heavier cold air slips down the slope into the hollow. The lighter warm air is in turn lifted up to our vineyard. Adjacent to the winery are Chardonnay vines planted in 1985. They grew for 35 years without experiencing freeze damage.

But the weather is changing. In 2020 we lost about half of the potential crop to the Mother’s Day freeze. We could be facing the same scenario over the next several mornings. These are not classic frosts where the still air allows for stratification. These are cold winds howling in from Canada. Our inversion advantage is lost.

The next few days will be stressful. We will update the Linden Vineyards web site and Instagram, Facebook accounts to let you know how our vines fared.

Linden Vineyards Cellar

Cellar “Library” Tastings

It has been a long time since Linden has held Cellar or Library Tastings, so we decided to blend the two. We are more than ready to pull corks of older vintages and share our experiences making them. A series of comparative flights will be held in Linden’s cellar by either winemaker Jonathan Weber, winegrower Shari Avenius, or owner Jim Law.

First weekend of every month. Limited availability. By reservation only. The cellar is chilly so bring an extra layer.
