Linden Update | August 28, 2025
Waiting
This is perfect ripening weather. Cool nights and warm, sunny days. The only moisture in the air is morning mist coming off of the warm pond water.
These are also perfect picking days. Cool mornings not only make harvest pleasant for us, but there is also a quality advantage to bringing in cool grapes. In 2023 and 2024 harvests were hot, buggy, and energy zapping. So we would like a break.
The only problem with this otherwise perfect scenario is that the grapes aren't ready. We wait and hope that this beautiful weather continues. This summer the vines have had a time of it. The rain, heat, and humidity have been challenging. It seems that the vines have purposely slowed ripening, so that the grapes are able to enjoy a few weeks of good weather before their commitment to becoming wine.
Looks like we have a couple more weeks before the harvest can begin. In some ways this is frustrating, as we are ready and would like to pick during this ideal weather. But these days are contributing to a concentration and freshness that can create a great vintage.
Patience.
New Fall Comparative Tasting
As the weather shifts, so do our wine preferences. This weekend Linden is introducing our fall lineup. These wines have been chosen to pair well with cool, crisp weather. Wabi Sabi is back. The 2021 vintage has a powerful texture with lots of savory notes. Young and old is the theme with two Village Chardonnays. A comparison of Petit Mansengs shows how vintage can play a big role in wine style. If you like spicy foods this is your wine. Finally with two 2021 reds, we contrast a fresh Claret with the fine tannins of Avenius Red.
