It Was A Very Good Year

On October 16, we picked Petit Verdot, which marked the end of red wine harvest. The quality of the 2025 reds promises to be outstanding. This wouldn't have seemed possible back in July, when we were experiencing one of the wettest growing seasons in memory. But the rains stopped.

Three factors contributed to the high quality of this year's harvest:

  1. The soils quickly dried after the rains ended. This happened just in time for the vines to experience hydric (water) stress: they ceased growing new leaves just as the grapes began to ripen in August. All their energy was then directed solely to the grapes. This resulted in a fast and uniform veraison (berry color change), which is critical for high quality in red wines.

  2. The crop was small. Less is more when it comes to quality. The vines concentrated ripening and flavors into fewer clusters. This makes more powerful wines, but alas, fewer bottles.

  3. From veraison to harvest, the nights were cool and the days were sunny and warm, but not hot. This allowed for retention of acidity, fresh aromas, and even, supple tannin development. These could be wines of both power and finesse.

This vintage will be special. As the wines finish fermentation and begin to express their personalities, we'll update you as to our thoughts and insights.
