Last Day of Harvest | November 5, 2025

After taking full advantage of ideal late fall weather, we finally picked Petit Manseng. It has all the qualities worthy of a Late Harvest designation: concentration and raisiny flavors while still retaining Petit Manseng’s signature piercing acidity.  Our last day of harvest was textbook beautiful. The air was crisp, the sky brilliant blue, and the low sun slowly warmed cold fingers. The clusters, the leaves, and the hillsides were all golden.

Many of our harvest days can be stressful. The timing critical; and it seems that we are often trying to hurriedly beat an approaching rain. But Petit Manseng isn’t much bothered by weather. Loose clusters and thick skins makes these grapes resilient to just about anything Mother Nature can throw at them. Especially once the late fall chill arrives. So we can choose a harvest date that is clement and convenient.

Wines for Thanksgiving

While acknowledging that, for many households, Thanksgiving dinner has evolved beyond turkey and trimmings, we are offering four wines that dovetail nicely with tradition.

2020 Petit Manseng demi-sec

Here is the ideal “greeter” wine. As guests arrive the exotic fruit and refreshing acidity, along with a touch of sweetness, makes for a celebratory start. It also pairs with just about any and all hors d’oeuvres.

2019 Hardscrabble Chardonnay

This library selection is in an ideal “drinking window” to pair with turkey. It has a richness and ripeness that comes from a hot dry growing season. Nor would it be lost with gravy and mashed potatoes.

2021 Claret

Medium bodied, red fruit, and refreshing acidity make Claret a crowd pleaser at a diverse table. It also works as a greeter wine for those guests who are “reds only” drinkers.

2016 Avenius Red

This is special. Full bodied, earthy, resolved tannins. A very ripe vintage now in its prime. I can’t stop thinking about stuffing. Lots of herbs and maybe some sausage.
