Linden Update | February 16, 2021

Just around the corner...

We are feeling very detached from our vines. Snow, sleet, ice, freezing rain, while none of it bothers the vines, it prevents us from pruning. It has been years since a good deep freeze like this has descended on the vineyard. Counterintuitively, what does damage vines is a string of unseasonably mild winter days quickly followed by a cold snap. The vines are lulled into a “false” spring and then zapped.

No worries. Spring is just around the corner.

No worries. Spring is just around the corner.

Opening in March

We are banking on March to bring us good pruning weather. And perhaps some warm, sunny weekends as Linden is re-opening Saturdays and Sundays starting on March 6. We’ll slowly ease into it by reservation only. Friends of Linden only. We will most definitely be looking forward to seeing you.

You are probably as tired of reading about the details of business reopenings as I am writing about them. So if you are interested, the details are just a click away. Reserve on Tock. I would rather write about vines and wines.

Avenius Vineyard

When Shari Avenius planted her eponymous vineyard in 1996, she must have been planning for climate change. The vineyard site is at high elevation with an east to northeast facing slope. The grapes ripen late in the season. We once picked the Petit Verdot while it was snowing.

Even with global warming, Avenius wines continue to retain a certain cool climate personality. They have a sinewy dense texture. Lean with little fat. The mineral quality of the acidity is the terroir’s signature. This is a perfect wine to confound a European palate in a blind tasting. But let’s not get too geeky as these wines shine on the dinner table. If a wine’s first job is to refresh the palate during a meal, then Avenius excels.

The structure and acidity of Avenius wines reward aging. This week’s four pack offering is a library selection from the 2014 and 2015 vintages. Detailed tasting notes and food pairing suggestions will be included with each shipment.
